Out of Context/Out of Mind I have always been inspired by what is familiar, what is routine, and what is not seen because it is so ordinary. Simple tools, kitchen utensils and other ordinary implements can represent nostalgia, a memory or a crime. Many of these instruments are works of engineering genius not recognized today. They can embody a duality that connotes virtue and vice simultaneously. This can include political symbols of strife from the English 1685 Monmouth Rebellion, also known as the Pitchfork Rebellion to the Soviet Revolutionary Banner of Marxism, the hammer and sickle. The drawings represented here are a selection from a larger portfolio of portraits of tools rendered without context. Their significance to the audience, whether loving or diabolical, is based purely on the individual viewer’s experience in relationship to the implements.
