Beautifully crafted Bronze Sculpture of the Maiden Series. She was created in 2010 and there are only 12 in the edition. This is #5 This work is inspired by Gustave Klimt’s Poisson d’Or (Fish of Gold) (c. 1901) and Danaë (1907). Both paintings depict luminous and colour-saturated images of nude women placed in erotically-folded positions that accentuate the female form. Klimt pushes the fleshiest parts of these women to the foreground of his paintings, confronting the viewer with their definitive femininity. I would like viewers to appreciate the technical quality of the work and the intricate positioning of the figure, which speaks to the woman’s emotional, psychological, and intellectual states. Viewers can interpret these in whatever ways they Unlike Klimt’s oil paintings, this sculptural piece doesn’t rely on colour disparities, so I enjoy the challenge of presenting the female form without the benefit of colour distinctions. I rely on light and texture to underscore its various components. As such, the figure’s hair plays a significant role in the sculpture as the fluted tresses distinguish themselves from the smooth surface of the form. Moreover, the long hair provides a source of comfort for the woman, who uses it, not only to reinforce her femininity, but to cushion her body against the hard surface upon which she rests.

I was born in South Africa in 1970. As a child we moved from Pietermaritzburg to Pretoria to Rustenburg to Jeffries Bay to Stellenbosch to Harare, finally settling in Cape Town. I spent my last year of school in Oxford, Ohio as an exchange student and then returned to Stellenbosch, where I completed a BA Degree in Graphic Design. For the next decade I lived in Northern Alberta, followed by a couple of years thawing out on the Island of Saipan. Thereafter I returned to South Africa via Ireland, and a few more years in Canada. I currently spend my time between South Africa and Canada. In South Africa I reside next to the Atlantic Ocean in a suburb nestled between the Twelve Apostles, Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and the Ocean. It is truly one of the most beautiful places on the planet. In Canada I live on the North Western Pacific Coast. more to follow....
