About The Artwork

Thomas Bernhard, the great Austrian writer, once said that the arts (literature most specifically) could never capture what life really was like. Life was always much more intense, more painful, more real than any words. The same, I believe, is true of paintings, but the gestural language of paint can, I believe, capture moments, flashes of emotion – the things that really make up our lives and which we forget seconds after. The title of this song reminds me of so many of my actions, thoughts, worries … and, of course, happinesses. It comes from a Billy Ocean song – a random reference for me since I don’t know his music so well. But I like the song, and it has specific resonances for me. This lyric of the title spoke to me while/after I painted this work … and it still does. Like some of my work, it’s a happy song with sad undertones: look at the lines, their relationship to each other, their interaction, their dancing and, ultimately, their meaning (for you). Dimensions include frame.

‘My pictures are songs: explosions of energy, meaning and communication. They are spurs for communication with the self and others.’ (Persi Darukhanawala) Persi Darukhanawala’s minimal pictures explore the uncertainty (and so, de facto, excitement) of life (ars longa, vita brevis). With multivalent richness, Darukhanawala’s painting-songs somehow communicate endless, elusive psychologies rather than reproducing already-known visuals. Like the vibrant songs with which they have polylogues, the paintings are life-embracing, positive but equally critical and the product of a spirit in revolt (‘l’homme révolté’). Darukhanawala has attracted sustained interest from academics, critics, individual collectors as well as design houses and hotels. He was shortlisted for the prestigious Art Olympia 2017 in Tokyo, Japan.
