Kevin is Cool - Limited Edition 1 of 10 Print

Kevin (the stuffed devil head that used to hang over my kitchen door) here appears as the centerpiece of a slightly naff shrine to vanity: surrounded by skulls engraved with the rune-like logos of overpriced fashion labels, Kevin overlooks burning candles, mirrors and flowers. The Black Flag bars, allegedly the most tattooed logo in the world and an almost unchallenged symbol of cool, are stamped on Kevin's forehead. Raymond Pettibon (the designer of the logo) and members of Black Flag (specifically Henry Rollins, with his 'creepy crawl' and 'wash this out of your life' tattoos) regularly flirted with Charles Manson imagery and the belladonna flowers that make up the foreground of the image are inspired by the story of Tex Watson, the Manson Family enforcer, who as legend would have it ingested a piece of belladonna root and was forever deranged from the subsequent hallucinatory experience. That belladonna is a plant used traditionally in witchcraft (Manson's girls were often referred to in the 60's Hollywood circles infiltrated by The Family as witches, Manson himself as a wizard) nicely compliments the cheesy horror move vibe.
