In this oil painting on masonite panel I portrayed a young teenage Chicana holding a boy in her arms. The girl looks worried, and much too old for her age; one also has to wonder if the rather defiant looking boy she holds is her own child. My painting is an all too familiar scene from the mean streets of Los Angeles where I grew up, and the work fundamentally expresses the desire, or hunger, for a different type of life. In 2005 the painting was commissioned by award-winning author Luis J. Rodríguez, as the original first edition cover art for his anthology, My Nature Is Hunger: New And Selected Poems, 1989 - 2004. In 2014 Rodríguez was officially made Poet Laureate of Los Angeles. My painting took its title from the writer's book of poems. I sought to create an image that reflected, not just the spirit of the poet's words, but the difficult realities of contemporary city life, and the different forms of 'hunger' people experience, the hunger for knowledge, social justice, love, and a better life. My painting is professionally framed in a lavish wood frame and is ready to hang.

I was born in Los Angeles, California in 1953, where I continue to live and work as professional artist. A painter and printmaker who creates images based on social observation and empathy for common people, I am a proponent of a new Social Realism for the 21st century. I favor craft, skill, beauty, draftsmanship, and profound narrative in art, and strive to create works that convey humanist concerns and a sense of the spiritual. I have been deeply influenced by the likes of Goya, the Mexican Muralists, the German Expressionists, the American Social Realist School of the 1930s and 1940s, and the Chicano Arts movement of the late 1960s. My commitment to figurative realism and universal themes of human solidarity and compassion are the perfect counterbalance to these chaotic times. In 2004 I founded the popular web log "Art for a Change," where I write about the intersection of art and politics; you can view my blog here: www.art-for-a-change.com/blog
