About The Artwork

People and nature need to thrive together. Native plants, birds and trees connect to the urban ecosystem. I'm putting urban nature on a pedestal.

ARTIST STATEMENT: Rachel Rovay is a contemporary artist; her thematic focus is on the experience of living in and around Melbourne’s urban environment. My art practice is based on observation, investigation, and wonderment. I find inspiration in the street corner, outdoor cafes, botanical gardens, backyards, interiors, and our everyday life. My art seeks to connect the sensibility of nature and re-engage the viewer with its essence. The element of surprise keeps me absorbed through the discovery of the unique and the illuminating. The principles of colour and shape are critical in my work as both create a positive response to our structured lives. A pictorial impact creating a sense of energy, much like the sun stimulating new life within an ecosystem. Innovative art methods allow me to explore the wilderness of thought and perception. An awareness of the ordinary, drawing attention to our connection to the urban space, the day-to-day common place. The unremarkable becomes and transforms into the extraordinary.
