This piece reflects both the artist's utopia and her reality; it is concerned with female relationships and bodies, as well as the regenerative quality of plants and leisure. The plant is in the artist's collection and was painted directly from life. The white plant pot is meant to feel like a hand-painted piece of pottery, while the representation of the plant exaggerates the rippling effect of its leaves viewed in person. One of these leaves reaches for what looks like a window. The scene on the pot of two women at leisure was inspired by Clara Tice, a controversial illustrator from the early 1900s (see attachment). She drew a lot of playful, adventurous, and occasionally erotic female portraits. The artist notes that she seemed to only represent white women, though. Miller's piece reflects a commitment to intersectional feminism.

www.hazelthepainter.com /// @hazelthepainter /// Hazel Miller’s paintings feature lush botanical life, statuesque figures, and wild animals and insects. Her work demonstrates an interest in the overlapping fields of natural history and art history. Themes of her work range from impermanence and spirituality to metaphysics and deep time. Miller's paintings are characterized by imaginative color palettes and a close attention to brushstroke textures, featuring fluid washes as well as impasto mark-making. Her most prominent stylistic inspirations include Modernist experimentations in semi-abstraction, sumi-e painting methods and philosophy, and the Ancient sculptures of early civilizations around the world. Originally from San Antonio, TX (b. 1993), Miller now calls Spokane, WA her home. She graduated from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2016 (Rose City Scholarship) and is a recipient of an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant (2018). Miller had her first solo show, “The Black Universe” in 2021 at Terrain Gallery in Spokane, WA. Miller also frequently works on curatorial projects, putting together collections and exhibitions both in person and online. NOTE: Most large paintings are shipped rolled in a tube, but many can be stretched and shipped in a box or crate upon request. Please inquire about specific piece for more info.
