About The Artwork

Insrpired by the many excellent Netherlandish portrait of Elizabethan times and using the techniques of the Flemish masters that date back to the start of the renaissance at the beginning of the 15th century, decades before Leonardo da Vinci was even born this portrait depicts Paddy my sister-in-law's thirteen year old cat in 2010. These techniques, up to a dozen layers of glazing and the meticulous attention to detail mean that it takes a long time to complete a painting - in this case it took between six and seven months to complete. Using largely single pigment oils on Italian poplar panel, he wears a jacket with slashed sleeves and fur lining, the slashes terminated with gold toggles. He has around his neck a ruby, emerald, sapphire and diamond encrusted gold chain. In his right hand, he holds an emerald and diamond enamelled gold salamander (with additional chain). The original was found in the Cheapside horde which was a small box, found in the basement of a jeweller's that had not been looked at since just after the reign of Elizabeth I. In effect, it had been lost to the world and only reappeared when workmen dug it up at the beginning of the 20th century. As this painting places the central character at the time of Elizabeth I, I thought it would be appropriate to indicate great wealth by him holding that very piece of jewellery before it was lost to us all. The illuminated parchment in the upper-left has a gold-leaf-illuminated initial 'P' of paddy and there are also a number of painted silver-leaf discs - all of which catch the light in a way that paint on its own can, giving this painting another fascinating aspect

I was born in Derby (England) in the 1960's and in my 20's I worked professionally for a number of years as the City of Derby's Pavement Artist and was even on the Thames Television (UK) show 'What's My Line' as a pavement artist and beat the panel. Recently, I designed a number of indic fonts that have been used in films, books, papers, posters, magazines and so on and of the top five Punjabi fonts used on the Internet, I have the top three places with 'GHP Full', 'Gurvetica' and 'Raaj'. I now work in oils on canvas and wooden panel, including projects that use only the materials that were available at the beginning of the 15th century (you can see original 15th century works in the National Gallery so we know that this technology represents an investment that will outlive many generations to come). My styles cover Anthropomorphic and non-Representational Abstract, through surrealism to that of the works of the 15th and 16th Century Dutch and Elizabethan artists.
