Ships in a Crate
Created in 2010, 72 15x15 cm individual paintings each representing one number from 1 to 72 combine to form my Prime Marks artwork. Arranged in left to right rows, each painting increases in value by 1 (i.e 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, then 9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16 and so on). A prime number is represented by a single unique icon. The non-prime numbers are represented by a combination of these prime icons to display their factors. For example: the primes 2 and 3 are represented by a yellow chevron and a red triangle respectively, and non-prime 6 is represented by a yellow chevron and a red triangle showing it is formed by prime factors 2 and 3 (2x3=6). Following the same logic, the individual canvases can be arranged in many different rectangular grid permutations, and each time they will show a new pattern of icons. United Kingdom
Born 1953 in the UK. Paul Ashwell produces striking abstract paintings and prints. Inspired by repeated journeys, geology, music and numbers, his background as a skilled printmaker also influences his work. Much of his work is created by superimposing layers - using plaster, tissue, newsprint and paint to bring out or obscure previous layers. He often uses gloss and matt to give different appearances in different light and from different angles. Paul's facination with number and pattern is a reoccuring theme. His Prime Marks is a good example of this. http://tinyurl.com/pzykw2m http://paulashwell.co.uk http://paulashwell.co.uk/prime
