About The Artwork

Insrpired by my kitten falling off a downstairs window ledge when she was trying to get in, this Netherlandish-style portrait of Romy the kitten as an Elizabethan harlequin jester shows the mischievous nature of kittenhood. Using largely single pigment oils on Italian poplar panel, she is painted using the techniques employed by the Flemish masters, Memling, Campin, Van der Weyden, Van Eyck et al in the renaissance at the beginning of the 15th century, some of whom had died years before Leonardo da Vinci was even born. These techniques, up to a dozen layers of glazing and the meticulous attention to detail mean that it takes a long time to complete a painting - in this case it took around five months to complete. Lit from our left, she wears a halequin costume with buttons made from gold, rubies, sapphires and emeralds and is complete with a hat with golden bells on it - each with a miniature of the scene as viewed from its perspective. In her right hand she holds a jester toy, a small cat with a similar gold-belled hat on a violet and white diamond pattern stick with a gold bell on the end. Her ruff and cuffs have gold at the edges and she sits on a violet and gold brocade cushion.

I was born in Derby (England) in the 1960's and in my 20's I worked professionally for a number of years as the City of Derby's Pavement Artist and was even on the Thames Television (UK) show 'What's My Line' as a pavement artist and beat the panel. Recently, I designed a number of indic fonts that have been used in films, books, papers, posters, magazines and so on and of the top five Punjabi fonts used on the Internet, I have the top three places with 'GHP Full', 'Gurvetica' and 'Raaj'. I now work in oils on canvas and wooden panel, including projects that use only the materials that were available at the beginning of the 15th century (you can see original 15th century works in the National Gallery so we know that this technology represents an investment that will outlive many generations to come). My styles cover Anthropomorphic and non-Representational Abstract, through surrealism to that of the works of the 15th and 16th Century Dutch and Elizabethan artists.
