'Self As Virginia Woolf'. Oil on canvas. 320 x 200 cm There has been a rather consistent history of fringe artists being regarded as making ‘outsider art’. Among them, a vast chunk is reserved for women, who have constantly been put aside when discussing the past’s most meaningful individuals. Nowadays, certain artists who, for a lack of a better subject, depict moments in history limited to the male gaze and filtered through a colourfully misogynistic painterly view, depicting women as simple stand-ins who get pies thrown in their faces. I am here to remind them that women tend to play a role that is fare more important than what they choose to showcast, who survive severe trauma and, through sheer mental tenacity change history. I am here to remind them that my generation has no interest in Darwinism for the sake of politics, but of equity for the sake of empowerment. Please note that the work comes with a wooden stretcher which can be easily dis/assembled. The canvas will be shipped in a roll with the stretcher disassembled to save on shipping costs.
