About The Artwork

Now we go inside the laboratory, to focus on the scientists, doctors and nurses, who are extracting methods for survival in the future – as seen from a 50s point of view. In the foreground, an experiment is being administered to a woman being fed into a cylinder, while a mass of computers record every step. This analog, hand-scissored collage is glued directly onto a flat wood board and is sprayed with an archival varnish coating. A floating Tasmanian Oak box frame gives it a modern finish. Ready to hang with D-rings.

Creating otherworldly and surreal new environments, Clinton Gorst is a master of analogue collage. His works are created by combining dozens of meticulously cut pieces, to form new, alternate worlds. Using original pages from vintage books as resources means he only gets one chance to cut out these objects, but it also brings size limitations. So a recent development of custom-printing backgrounds has allowed for creating largescale works within his seamless photomontage process. Storytelling is an important part of his creations, and themes can include Brutalist or Modernist architecture, sci-fi and technology, to commenting on climate crisis, or portals to another dimension. This retro-futuristic vision of space and science, lead to his significant involvement in FUTURE, his first regional gallery showing at Casula Powerhouse in 2019 which was selected by ART GUIDE AUSTRALIA as one of the top 5 exhibitions to see nationwide. More recently he was asked to be part of BARE BONES at AIRspace projects, where the artists were asked to respond to the poems of JR Waen, and he returned to focus on people and humanity for these pieces – a theme that was prominent in his early Pop-style works from the ‘90s.
