When the Dumplings Blow focuses on a group of Yatai's, a Japanese 19th century food stall, many of which are still in use today. The Yatai's are the vehicle for the piece, used to start a dialogue on the nature of change, adaptation and 'development'. For three centuries the Yatai's have been adapted and outfitted with the most modern advertising neon lighting, signs and equipment for the time. The base and the core wooden framework however have been kept intact. With this in mind the drawing was painted and drawn using a combination of traditional and contemporary methods. The framework, the black thin lines were drawn using a graphics tablet with the 'advertisement' colour produced via watercolour, Japanese calligraphy brushes, coloured pencil and stencil work which is then scanned into the digital space and paired up to produce the final drawing. The use of traditional and modern methods to produce the work mimics the Yatai's evolution through time.
