Zebras have such a wondrous and uniquely hypnotizing ''bar code'' of a skin-pattern. As if our eyes cannot choose between all the artful lines of bordering black-and-white. Standing side by side, they always 'match', and blend well, together. Even (the hair of) their manes correspond exactly with the stripe-sequence of their coat.

These two mesmerizing specimens caught my eye during one of my regular visits to Blijdorp, the zoo in Rotterdam (the Netherlands), and they were 'ligning up' perfectly.

The painting comes without a frame. I always paint the sides of the work, so that the scene carries over to the edges. This way there is the option of not framing. I also wire my paintings. Thus, the work is totally finished and ready to hang.

1964, Schiedam,The Netherlands, Clara Bastian. After attending the art academy (ABK Rotterdam) Clara Bastian (1964) obtained a foundational course in biology, a study that met her fascination for anatomy. Her oeuvre consists of commission portraits as well as free work. Her free work does not only show her mastery of the trade, but above all her original view of reality. The intriguing portraits of animals and people that Clara Bastian makes are painted with great skill. With the reproduction of texture, light and shadows her work seems almost more realistic than a photograph… http://www.dutchcows.com http://www.clarabastian.com
