In The Dark Sculpture

Dhont was born in what was the Belgian Congo and these origins have clearly impacted on his approach to form. The work is undoubtedly "African" in flavour in its choice of image and in its concerns with primal symbolic content. Using the dark, somewhat ominous forms that arise from the convoluted weavings of bark as a basic vehicle, the artist manipulates the small figures in relationships with each other and with the viewer. The work functions on a potent combination of simplicity and complexity and demands similar responses from those who engage with it. Sometimes macabre, sometimes humorous, these little vignettes of the human condition have the power to evoke both sympathy and wonder.
