Star Gazer Sculpture

Most of my inspiration comes from the material I choose to work with – and then comes the idea in which to contort the material. I knew right from the start that I would use H-beams for my sculpture. During my extensive research I soon found out that figurative H-beam sculptures could hardly be found – they were more leaning towards the Abstract. Being absolutely clear about all the challenges this would come with, the idea inspired me in choosing H-beams as material. As I planned to do every stage for every single piece myself, I spent months in research and development on how to successfully and safely process each challenge ahead. This modern style sculpture is of a horse gazing towards the sky and consists of 3x 6 meter long H-beams. Each part was individually shaped by exerting an immense amount of pressure, extreme heat and then welded together to create a modern twist on a horse which is larger than life size. The whole body has been copper electroplated in a bath of hydrochloric acid and then patinated with various compounds to achieve an interesting visual effect – the galvanized tail was etched to complement the body. To reduce the effects of natural oxidisation all components have been UV lacquered for weather protection. I hope people will enjoy looking at its form and stature and enjoy its varied patina and maybe wonder about the complexity of its transformation from a structural building support to an original piece of modern sculpture. Due to its size the sculpture is currently stored in its sections - a detailed manual on how to assemble will be included to the shipment. By request, I could assemble the sculpture on-site if my expenses would be covered.
